Welcome to Kilfenora

Kilfenora is located in north County Clare, near the sea on the west coast of Ireland. It is a gateway to the fabulous Burren area of limestone paving, hills and caves, renowned for its Spring flowers, caves, castles, iron age forts and ancient tombs - and also the nearby Cliffs of Moher, Ailwee Caves and beaches at Lahinch and Fanore.

Kilfenora itself is famous for its musical and dance tradition, built up over centuries. In particular the Kilfenora Céilí Band - founded over 100 years ago in 1909, and going stronger than ever - is an ambassador for Irish music and culture around the world.

Kilfenora was also featured heavily in the perennially popular TV series "Father Ted". See if you can spot places featured in the programmes - and see the Father Ted page for more information.

A warm welcome awaits you in Kilfenora, in its pubs and shops and at the Burren Centre and Tearooms.

Come and visit our ancient cathedral, with its carvings and its celtic crosses.

See 'About Kilfenora' for details of our history, accommodation and services, and directions to the village.

But for the true Kilfenora experience, make sure you stay overnight and experience the céilís and music sessions for which the village is celebrated.

Or visit us when we stage events such as the annual music festival in April. You can get a sense of the atmosphere from this, and from the Clare Fleadh staged in Kilfenora 2009-11, by accessing

  • the photo gallery pages on this site
  • listening to some sound clips - below - of pub sessions recorded during Kilfenora's festivals.

The 'city of the crosses' and the home of céilí music, Kilfenora in North Clare is the gateway to the Burren and a village with well over 1000 years of history.
